Hausa Orthography Rules: The Dirka Particles
There are two ‘dirka’ particles
in Hausa: ‘ce’ and ‘ne.’
a. The particle ‘ce’ is used to mark the feminine. Wherever it appears, it must
refer to a feminine subject.
b. The particle ‘ne’ is used to mark the masculine, and wherever it appears, it
must refer to a masculine subject.
c. In the case of plurals, ‘ne’ is also
used.
In Hausa orthography, dirka particles fall under the rules of word
separation. This means that whenever they occur in writing, they must always be
written as independent words,
never joined to any other word.
In this lesson, we provide examples of dirka particles in full sentences to illustrate how this rule works in practice.
