Sunayen alkunya su ne waɗanda ake ba mutum domin sakaya sunansa na yanka wanda ake jin nauyin faɗarsa.

A al’adar Larabawa, kunya takan soma ne da kalmar Abu wadda take ɗauke da ma’anar Baban. . . Akan jingina ta ga ɗan fari na mutum ne. Misali, idan ɗan mutum ya kasance sunansa Musa, kunyarsa sai ta zamanto Abu-Musa. Duk da haka, ba kullum takan zama hakan ba. Akan iya yi wa mutum kunya da sunan wani daga cikin ‘ya’yansa, ko kuma wani daga cikin dangi ko wani abu da yake so. Misali, shahararren Sahabin Annabi S. A. W. wanda yake son ‘yar kyanwa. Ya shahara ne da alkunyarsa ba da sunansa na yanka ba, wato Abu – Hurairah, wadda HURAIRAH tana nufin ‘yar kyanwa.

Al-Miƙdad bin Amr, shi ne sojan dawaki na farko a Musulunci. Ana yi masa kunya da Abul–Aswad, akan kira shi Abu–Umar, an kuma kira shi Abu–Sa’id. Shi ne mutum na bakwai da ya bayyana karɓar Musuluncinsa a sarari (fili).

Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib an yi masa kunya da ‘ya’yansa guda biyu ‘Ya’ala da Umarah.

Umar bin Al-Khattab an yi masa kunya da Abu Hafs da dai sauransu.

Akwai kuma wasu sunayen alkunya da suka zama na yanka da al’ummar Musulmi suke raɗa wa ‘ya’yansu. Misalan irin waɗannan sunayen su ne:

a. Abu-Bakar: Sunansa na yanka shi ne, Abdullahi bin Amir bin Amr bin Ka’b bin Taim bin Murrah Alƙurashi At-Taimi.

b. Jawairiyah bint Al-Harith: Sunanta na yanka Barrah.

c. Maimuunah bint Al-Harith: Sunanta na yanka shi ne Barrah.
