Is It Allowed To Swallow The Sperm?

Is it allowed for a muslim to suck or lick his wife Private part? What is the Islamic law about a woman swallowing her husband’s semen?

All perfect praise be to Allaah.

The issue of oral sex is nowhere mentioned explicitly in the Qur’an or the Hadiths. In such cases for it to be allowed, we have to see if it conflicts with other principles laid down by the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Scholars have various opinions and fatwas regarding oral sex: some say it’s halal, some say it’s haram, some say it’s disliked (makruh), while some even say it’s against humanity!

But I, based on my knowledge, study, and understanding, say it’s conditional. If it fulfils the following conditions it would be lawful. If it doesn’t it would be unlawful. The conditions are:

1. it should not involve any filth/impurity (najasah), e.g. urine, menstrual blood, postpartum blood.

2. it should be performed only on the front genitals (i.e. the penis and the vagina), not on the rear genitals (i.e. the anus), because anus is a place of persistent filth and hence, all anal activities (like anal fingering, anal sex, anal licking) are haram.

3. both the husband and the wife should urinate and wash their genitals thorougly before performing oral sex, because if they do not then there are chances urine may get involved during oral sex. But it’s only a recommendation rather than a condition.

If these three conditions are fulfilled then oral sex will be halal form of sexual pleasure with one’s spouse.

Based on the above three conditions it is deducible that a husband is not allowed to perform cunnilingus (oral sex on vagina) when the wife is menstruating or is in her postpartum period, but the wife can perform fellatio (oral sex on penis) during these periods.

Swallowing the sperm is forbidden even according to the scholars may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  them who do not consider it impure. Imaam An-Nawawi may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said in Al-Majmoo': 'There are two opinions about swallowing sperm. However, the most correct opinion is that it is forbidden because it is filthy.

According to the strongest opinion, it is not allowed to swallow or consume sperm due to several reasons below:

1. First: It is possible that during the act some impure materials such as madzi, wadi, or urine were also swallowed.

2. Second: sperm is considered as a disgusting material (mustakhbats) thus even the scholars who stated that sperm is something pure argued that it is not allowed to swallow it, based on Allah’s decree:

وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْخَبَائِثَ .

“..and he (the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-) prohibits all corrupt things..” (Suratul-A’raaf: 157)

An Nawawy -may Allah have mercy on him- said:

هل يحل أكل المني الطاهر؟ فيه وجهان: الصحيح المشهور أنه لا يحل لأنه مستخبث

“Is it allowed to swallow the pure sperm? There are two opinions (regarding this matter), and the correct and popular one is that it is not allowed because it is disgusting (mustakhbats). ” ( See: Al-Majmu’ 2/575)
